EPAL pilot prompts improvements
26 November 2008
With the programme pallets can be identified for repair
GS1 in Europe has completed phase one of its European Pallet Association (EPAL) EPC/RFID pilot programme.
The pilot explored the use of radio frequency identification (RFID) tags and electronic product code (EPC) in standard EPAL wooden pallets (Euro pallets).
GS1 in Europe is a collaboration of 44 European GS1 members that form a global not-for-profit standards and solutions organisation. Microsoft technology fully supports GS1 standards.
The EPC/RFID pilot programme has enabled EPAL to identify improvements to the production and repair of Euro pallets, the authentication of individual pallets, the reduction of counterfeit pallets and overall supply chain efficiency.
“We are very satisfied with the results of the pilot programme. The EPC/RFID technology, the tag concept and the IT infrastructure have been approved and are seen as a very good solution for EPAL,” said Harry Jacobi, CEO of EPAL. “The second phase of the project will answer all the remaining questions and will help us to prepare a roll-out.”
