HIMSS12, the US’s premier health information technology conference, begins today in Las Vegas.
HIMSS is a cause-based, not-for-profit organisation focused on providing global leadership for the optimal use of IT and management systems for the betterment of healthcare.
This year’s HIMSS conference features keynote speeches from co-founder of Twitter Biz Stone; Farzad Mostashari, National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, US Department of Health and Human Services; and Nightline anchor Terry Moran.
At the four-day healthcare event, there will be more than 1,100 exhibitors, and 300 sessions from 23 topic categories over four days.
Two key themes this year, which are permeating all industries and not just the healthcare, will be mobile healthcare and the cloud.
Microsoft will also have a significant presence at the healthcare event, especially after the announcement that it will be creating a joint venture with GE Healthcare.
The new venture, called Caradigm, is aimed at helping healthcare organisations and professionals use real-time, system-wide intelligence to improve healthcare quality and the patient experience.
Another key area that Microsoft will focus on is business intelligence (BI), with the launch of SQL Server 2012 next month.
The company will deliver a couple of sessions around BI, as well as technologies like Kinect, Lync and Dynamics CRM.
