David Law, Microsoft Outlook.com was also the first e-mail service that connected to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google and Skype.
"We saw an opportunity to make e-mail better by using your connections on social networks to enrich your e-mail experience,” said Chris Jones, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of Windows Live, in his Outlook blog.
“Millions of people are connecting Outlook.com to Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to keep up-to-date on their friends' contact info, updates, photos, and Tweets,” added David Law, director of Product Management, Outlook.com in a blog post. “And a number of people have expressed appreciation that Outlook.com replaces advertising with the latest updates from Facebook or Twitter when they're reading email from one of their contacts.”
“Outlook.com's tools for handling newsletters and commercial mail, which make up as much as 80 per cent of the typical inbox, are another set of well-received and well-used features,” added Law. “Outlook.com comes with Sweep, a simple but powerful feature that helps people clear out their inbox by moving, archiving, or deleting specific e-mail (and having this happen automatically in the future, if they want).”
The e-mail service is also designed to make it easy to send hundreds of photos and videos in a single message – all powered by SkyDrive. Microsoft is also including free Office Web Apps (Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote) and SkyDrive.
Following the success of Outlook and its desktop application for PCs and Macs, Microsoft decided to offer Outlook as a personal e-mail service, with Outlook.com.
Outlook.com also uses Exchange ActiveSync so it powers mail, calendar and people experience on smartphones, tablets.
Microsoft expects all people using Hotmail to be upgraded by this summer.
