Picking accuracy for AWG
20 November 2008
The BCP solution has noticeably improved AWG's picking accuracy
UK grocery wholesaler Appleby Westward Group (AWG) has reported a 97.3 per cent reduction in picking errors, saving over £100,000 per year, following its investment in BCP’s Accord Voice Recognition technology.
AWG had been using radio frequency scanning technology for goods receiving, forklift truck put-away and replenishment, but still picked orders using manual pick-by-label. This was efficient, but subject to human inaccuracy. The company was keen to improve picking accuracy, provide a better service to customers and reduce the substantial costs associated with incorrect deliveries.
Following the reported success of Accord Voice technology at Spar distributors, AWG decided to invest in the same solution for its 7,200 sq m regional distribution centre. The investment encompasses BCP’s complete Accord Voice Directed Picking solution, which runs on Microsoft Windows.
“Assemblers – even those who’ve been with us for years and very settled into the old system – really like the new technology,” said Philip Brewer, AWG's operations and IT director. “They’re keen to extend it to other warehouse activities as they’ve found it makes their jobs much easier. Indeed, if asked, they wouldn’t want to go back to the old assembly label processes.”
