Touch tech at the CEO Summit

Bill Gates demonstrated Microsoft’s latest technology offering, Touch Wall, at the Microsoft CEO Summit 2008.

The new hardware is a touch-based ‘white board’ interface that lets users interact with data and applications on their computer using their hands and gestures.

The Microsoft Surface-based product uses infrared and laser technology to sense movement and contact, to give what Microsoft describes as a more natural interactive experience.

Gates also demonstrated Plex, the software that runs on the Touch Wall hardware. It is designed to take advantage of the non-linear and multi-user possibilities Touch Wall offers.

While the technology is currently too expensive for individuals, Gates predicted that the cost would drop and the technology would shortly become viable for consumers.

“We're saying it will be absolutely pervasive,” said Gates. “When I say everywhere, I mean the individual’s office, the home, the living room.”
